We wanted better devex
on the fastest edge.

Virke was started by Love and Billy — two developers who were tired of bad developer experience and the slowness they kept running into with other edge vendors.

We’d tried most of the platforms. They all promised “the edge” but the reality was cold starts measured in hundreds of milliseconds, deploy pipelines that felt sluggish, and abstractions that got in the way more than they helped. We spent more time fighting the platform than building on it.

Then we found Fastly. The speed was real — sub-millisecond warm starts, 94+ global POPs, a network built for performance at a level the others couldn’t match. We were genuinely happy with the infrastructure.

But the developer experience for building on Compute wasn’t there yet. The tooling was slow, the workflow was rough, and the gap between “this infrastructure is incredible” and “I can ship on this quickly” was wide. We knew Fastly had the best foundation — it just needed a better front door.

So we built one.

What Virke is

Virke is an open-source developer platform built entirely on Fastly’s edge infrastructure. Static site hosting, edge compute, databases, key-value storage, object storage — all running on the same network that powers some of the largest sites on the internet.

The API is a Rust Compute@Edge service. The dashboard is served from Object Store. The control plane is SQLite in KV Store. Virke runs on Virke.

One CLI command to deploy. Instant rollback. Preview every PR. Bring your own Fastly account or use ours. Full source code, no lock-in.

The name

Virke is a Swedish word for the raw timber used in construction — the fundamental material you build with. Not the finished product, but the strong, reliable material that makes it possible.

That’s what we wanted to build: the raw material for the edge. The infrastructure layer that stays out of your way and lets you ship.

How we build

Speed is a feature

If it's not fast, it's not done. Deploys in seconds. Rollback in zero. Warm latency under a millisecond. Every interaction should feel instant.

Developer experience first

The CLI is the primary interface. One command to deploy. Sensible defaults. No YAML walls. If you need to read a manual to deploy a static site, the platform has failed.

Open source, no lock-in

Every component is open source — CLI, API, dashboard, runtime, SDK. Self-host on your own Fastly account for free. Or use Virke Cloud with simple pay-as-you-go pricing.

Built on the best infrastructure

We don't run our own network. Fastly does that better than we ever could. We build the developer experience layer on top of world-class infrastructure.
